امروزه مهار و مدیریت بیماری‌های خاکزاد و علف‌های هرز بسیار مشکل و هزینه‌بر می‌باشد. در دهه‌های اخیر به دلیل مدیریت نامناسب و استفاده‌ی بیش از حد سموم آفت‌کش و آلودگی‌های زیست‌محیطی، فلور و فون رو و زیر خاک به مخاطره افتاده است. به همین دلیل اکثر بوم‌شناسان و متخصصین بیماری‌های گیاهی به فکر یافتن راهی جایگزین جهت کاهش این عوامل برآمده‌اند. یکی از این رهیافت‌ها، ضدعفونی خاک با کمک نور خورشید است. آفتاب‌دهی یک روش غیر شیمیایی ساده، ارزان، پاک و کارا جهت مدیریت بیماری‌های گیاهی خاکز‌اد، بعضی از آفات و همچنین بذور بسیاری از علف‌های هرز محسوب می‌شود. این روش بر مبنای اصول زیست­بوم­شناسی در مدیریت بیماری‌ها، آفات و علف‌های هرز و حفظ محیط‌زیست و همچنین کاهش تأثیرات منفی علف‌کش‌ها و آفت‌کش‌ها بسیار مفید و کارا عمل می‌کند و در بسیاری از کشورهای توسعه‌یافته به‌وفور مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. در این مقاله تاریخچه، مزایا و اصول انجام عملیات آفتاب‌دهی خاک، شرح داده شده است.
