اثر پیش‌تیمار بر جوانه‌زنی و رشد اولیه گیاهچه ارزن در شرایط تنش خشکی و شوری در آزمایشگاه مورد بررسی قرار گرفت. آزمایش به صورت فاکتوریل سه عاملی بر پایه طرح کاملاً تصادفی در سه تکرار انجام گرفت. عامل اول پرایمینگ بذر (شاهد، پیش‌تیمار آب و پرایمینگ با نیترات پتاسیم)، عامل دوم تنش خشکی و شوری (اعمال شده با پلی اتیلن گلیکول 6000 و کلرید سدیم) و عامل سوم سطوح پتانسیل اسمزی (صفر، 3/0-، 6/0-، 9/0- و 2/1- مگاپاسکل) بود. نتایج نشان داد که جوانه‌زنی بذر ارزن تحت تأثیر کاهش پتانسیل اسمزی قرار گرفت. به طوری که با کاهش پتانسیل اسمزی، عملکرد جوانه‌زنی نیز کاهش یافت. پاسخ جوانه‌زنی بذر ارزن در شرایط تنش خشکی و شوری متفاوت بود. به طوری که بذور در تمامی غلظت‌های کلرید سدیم جوانه زدند؛ اما در شرایط تنش خشکی، جوانه‌زنی بذور پیش‌تیمار نشده و پرایمینگ شده با نیترات پتاسیم، از پتانسیل اسمزی 6/0- مگاپاسکال و کمتر، متوقف شد. به عبارت دیگر، اثر تنش خشکی بر کاهش جوانه‌زنی بیشتر از تنش شوری بود. با این حال، هر دو روش پرایمینگ (آب و نیترات پتاسیم) عملکرد جوانه‌زنی بذر ارزن را در شرایط تنش خشکی و شوری بهبود بخشیدند که در این مورد اثر پیش‌تیمار آبی بیشتر از پیش‌تیمار با نیترات پتاسیم بود.
