مقاومت فزاینده عوامل بیماری‌زای گیاهی به آفت‌کش‌های شیمیایی و نگرانی‌های ناشی از پیامدهای زیست‌محیطی مصرف آنها، ضرورت توسعه راهکارهای پایدار و سازگار با محیط‌زیست را افزایش داده است. کیتوزان، به‌عنوان یک زیست‌پلیمر طبیعی و زیست‌تخریب‌پذیر، به دلیل برخورداری از فعالیت ضدمیکروبی و توانایی تحریک سامانه‌های دفاعی گیاه، ظرفیت قابل‌توجهی برای مدیریت پایدار بیماری‌های گیاهی دارد. منابع مختلف تولید کیتوزان شامل پوسته سخت‌پوستان، قارچ‌ها و کوتیکول حشرات و نیز روش‌های استخراج و عوامل تعیین‌کننده کیفیت آن، به‌ویژه درجه استیل‌زدایی و وزن مولکولی، سازوکارهای چندگانه عملکرد کیتوزان شامل فعالیت مستقیم ضدمیکروبی از طریق اختلال در ساختار و نفوذپذیری غشای عوامل بیماری‌زا، القای مقاومت سیستمیک از طریق فعال‌سازی مسیرهای دفاعی و هورمونی، افزایش فعالیت آنزیم‌های دفاعی نظیر کیتیناز و گلوکاناز، و تقویت سدهای ساختاری مانند لیگنین و کالوز، نقش کیتوزان در کاهش برخی تنش‌های غیرزیستی و بهبود رشد و عملکرد گیاه در این مقاله شرح داده شده­اند. توسعه فرمولاسیون‌های هوشمند و نانوساختار، بهینه‌سازی تولید کیتوزان از منابع پایدار و تلفیق هدفمند آن با سایر روشهای مدیریت بیماریهای گیاهی، می‌تواند جایگاه این زیست‌پلیمر را در کشاورزی پایدار و افزایش تولید محصولهای گیاهی تقویت کند.
