Abstract

Due to the importance of medicinal plants, understanding the seed germination response to temperature is agronomically important. A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the effect of different temperatures on seed germination of fennel, cannabis and sesame in a completely randomized design with four replications. Various constant temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40°C) were considered. According to the results, the effect of temperature on germination rate and percentage in all species was significant. The seeds of fennel were not germinated in 5, 35 and 40 0C and seeds of sesame germinated only in 5 0C. The maximum rate of germination obtained in 30 °C for fennel and 25 °C for sesame and cannabis. The highest germination percentage of fennel and cannabis and sesame were in 20, 25 and 30 0C respectively. The lowest of germination uniformity (GU) were observed in 20 0C for fennel and in 15 0C for cannabis and sesame. Amount of seedling vigor maximized for fennel and cannabis in 250C and for sesame in the 300C. The values of length and weight of radical and plumule were enhanced with the increase of temperature and record on maximum in special temperature and then reduced slowly. The quantitative information provided by this study can be used in prediction of emergence under diverse temperature conditions. Germination of cannabis seeds occurred in a wide range of temperatures and this seed are less sensitive to temperature compared to the other two plants. Germination of fennel seeds was less, except at 200C. The sesame seeds had good germination at 15-35 0C.

Abstract

In order to study of drought stress and normal irrigation effect on seed germination and seedling vigor of 10 oilseed rape spring genotypes, RGS003, Sarigol, Option 500, RGS006, 19_H, ORS3150-3006, ORS3150-3008, RG4403, RG405/03 and RGAS0324, an experiment was conducted as factorial, based on a completely randomized design with four replications, in the seed analysis laboratory of Seed and Plant Certification and Registration Institution at Karaj during 2013. Results indicated that RG4403 genotype by 3.498 gr. and RGS006 genotype by 3.082 gr had the highest and lowest one thousand seeds weight respectively. Seeds of Sarigol, Option500 and RGS006 genotype, respectively, by normal irrigation and drought stress, had the most primary root, shoot and seedling length and seeds of ORS3150-3008 and RGAS0324 genotypes by normal irrigation respectively had the most primary root and seedling and primary shoot and seedling dry weight. Seeds of Sarigol and RGAS0324 genotypes by normal irrigation had the highest final germination percent. The highest mean germination time, the coefficient of the velocity of germination and mean daily germination, also respectively belonged to seeds of RGS003genotype by drought stress and19-H and RGAS0324 genotypes by normal irrigation. Besides, Sarigol and RGAS0324 had the most length and weight vigor indices. Generally, results showed that drought stress at flowering and maturity duration caused a decrease in seed quality of studied genotypes, but under what conditions, some genotypes like RGS006, 19-H and ORS3150-3006 seed had relatively optimum germination quality and seedling vigor traits.

Abstract

In order to determinate the cardinal temperatures and investigate the effect of temperature on seed germination and seedling growth of Securigera securidaca, a study was conducted in a completely randomized design with 8 temperature treatments (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40oC) and four replications in research laboratory of faculty of agriculture at the Birjand University in 2013. A two-segmented linear regression model was fitted between germination rate and temperatures to determine cardinal temperatures for germination. Cardinal (minimum, optimum and maximum) temperatures of germination were determined as -1, 22.5 and 40.2oC respectively. Maximum rate and percentage of germination obtained in the range of 20-25oC. Maximum of radicle length and dry weight, maximum of caulicle length and dry weight and maximum of vigor seedling were obtained in 20oC,10-20oC and 5-30oC respectively. Maximum and minimum germination uniformity (GU) was obtained in 25 and 5oC.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Nano TiO2 and Nano CNT on some germination indices and growth parameters of some hulled barley cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a laboratory at Shahrekord University during 2014. The study was a factorial, adopting a completely randomized design with four replications. Treatments consisted of titanium dioxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotube (CNT) in four concentrations (0, 10, 30 and 60 mg.l-1) which were applied to seeds of hulled barley cultivars such as Bahman, Makoii and Nosrat. The traits measured were the dry weight of seedling and seedling length, germination percentage, germination rate, mean germination time, the percentage of resistance of radical, seedling vigor length and weight index. The results showed that carbon nanotubes treatments with 60 mg.l-1 had a significant impact on germination percentage, germination rate, seedling vigor length and weight index and seedling dry weight, as compared with other treatments. In this experiment, the highest percentages of resistance of radicle, seedling vigor weight index and seedling dry weight of Nosrat Cultivar were obtained under 60 mg.l-1 carbon nanotube treatment, which was 70, 122.2 and 64.9%, respectively, as compared with control treatment. In addition, 60 mg.l-1 carbon nanotube treatment increased the seedling vigor of Makoii cultivar by 39.8%, as compared with the control treatment. The findings were that in terms of seedling vigor length and weight index, seedling length, seedling dry weight and the percentage of resistance of radical, the Nosrat Cultivar showed better morphological characteristics than Bahman and Makoii cultivars, under laboratory conditions.

Introduction: Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonolob) which belongs to fabaceae and leguminosae families is self-pollinating and is indigenous to India and Pakistan. This plant is suitable for growth in dry, damp and sandy soils, and can tolerate saline and relatively alkaline soils. Determining the best time for harvesting seeds and its timing with maximum quality is one of the important issues in the field of seed production management. The changes in the physiological quality of seeds occur during development until seed treatment. The use of high-quality seeds plays an important role in the final yield of crops. The purpose of this study was to determine the most suitable time for harvesting seeds because seed moisture content at harvest time is one of the most important factors affecting seed quality.
Materials and Methods: This research was carried out in July 2013 at Iraqi Research Station in Gorgan, Golestan, Iran in a split-plot design with four replications. The treatments consisted of the time of harvesting the seeds from the mother's base in six stages (with different moisture content) and harvesting places (upper, middle, and bottom pods) so that, starting from the podding, every 7 days, the seeds were removed from the base. The mother was harvested and such traits as germination rate, germination percentage, seedling vigor, seed moisture content, and alpha-amylase activity were calculated. In this research, a logistic model was used to study the changes in germination percentage, germination rate, seedling vigor index and straw index during seed dressing on Guar.
Results: The results of this study showed that the hypothesis that seed reaches its maximum quality at the end of the period of seed filling is confirmed, suggesting that with a moisture content of 30 and 14% in late seed filling period, Guar seeds have the highest quality. In general, the results of the present study confirm that the stages of development and management of Guar seeds on maternal basis have an impact on its quality. In the early stages of growth (humidity 85, 80 and 62 percent), due to prematurity and lack of essential seed structures, the qualitative traits of germination percentage, germination rate, seedling vigor, and strawberry index were low, and with the evolution of essential structures and reduced seed moisture content (58, 30 and 14%), the quality traits increased.
Conclusions: In general, it can be concluded that the best timing for harvesting Guar seeds with the highest quality in Golestan province is when seed moisture reaches 14% or 100 days after planting, and the pods formed at the bottom are the ones with the highest quality.

Introduction: Barley is the fourth largest cereal crop in the world and the second cereal crop in Iran in supplying food needs. Considering population growth and food shortages, it is important to look at ways to increase production. Seeds of higher quality and vigor emerge better when exposed to biotic and abiotic stresses and have stronger seedlings with higher vigor. It seems that one of the appropriate strategies for reducing or moderating the effect of stress on yield is foliar application with micronutrients which can also affect germination and vigor of the produced seeds. For this purpose, the effect of water stress and foliar application on germination characteristics and vigor of barley seeds was investigated.
 Materials and Methods: A factorial experiment was carried out based on CRD with four replications on the seeds resulted from a field experiment at Isfahan Kaboutarabad Agricultural Research Station, during the cropping year of 2018-19.  The main factors was foliar application at five levels: no foliar application(water use), zinc sulfate (0.5%), potassium sulfate (0.5%) and salicylic acid (1.5 mM), and superoxide dismutase (3 mg/liter) at the start of tillering for three times at seven day intervals and the sub-factor was genotypes was Goharan (drought tolerant), Mehr (salt-tolerant) and Armaghan (stress-sensitive). After harvesting, germination traits were evaluated.
Results: Foliar application of maternal barley plant at the late season drought stress had a significant effect on root and shoots length, root and shoot dry weight, length and weight vigor indices, allometric coefficient and germination uniformity of seed. Also among the studied cultivars in late season irrigation cut off conditions, Goharan cultivar had a better shoot and root development (seedling vigor weight index) and higher seed germination uniformity.
Conclusion: Foliar application of potassium sulfate and zinc sulfate on different barley cultivars resulted in favorable metabolic conditions in seed and due to better root development and higher dry weight than stem development and as a result, higher allometric coefficient and better establishment under late season drought stress, may provide better growth conditions under drought stress conditions.

Introduction: Guar (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba L.) is an annual, dicotyledonous plant of the legume family, also known as cluster beans. This plant can tolerate salinity and drought stress well. Optimal planting date and plant density are factors affecting the quality and quantity of crops. The distribution of plants in the field influences the absorption and productivity of environmental factors affecting the growth and intra- and inter- competition and eventually is one of the factors determining the quantity and quality of yield. Different planting dates set off different conditions in terms of temperature day length, relative humidity, solar radiation, ripening and harvest time and thus, affect the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of seeds. The purpose of this experiment is to evaluate the quality and also to evaluate some of the germination characteristics of Guar seeds at different dates and planting densities under the climatic conditions of Guilan.
Materials and Methods: This experiment was conducted in the spring and summer of 2017 in the research farm of Rasht Rice Research Institute located in Gil Pardehsar village at Sangar as a factorial based on a randomized complete block design with three replications. Experimental treatments included four planting dates (12 May, 26 May, 9 June and 23 June) and three plant densities (20, 40 and 60 plants. m-2). Seed harvesting was done as the pods in 75% of the plants in each plot turned brown and traits such as germination percentage, germination rate, root and shoot length and fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, longitudinal index of seedling vigor, 1000- grain weight, electrical conductivity and alpha-amylase activity were investigated.
Results: The results of the present study showed that guar seeds had the highest quality on 26 May and a density of 40 plants.m-2. Due to favorable climatic conditions during the period of seed filling, germination rate, germination percentage, seedling vigor index, root length and 1000- grain weight was high on 26 May. The amount of these traits decreased with delay in planting. The amount of electrical conductivity in 23 June date of planting treatment showed the highest value. The highest level of alpha-amylase activity was observed on 9 June.
Conclusions: In general, it can be concluded that the best planting date and plant density of guar seeds in Guilan province with the highest quality of seeds and germination is on 26 May and 40 plants.m-2.

Introduction: The application of different physical, chemical, and hormonal treatments mainly improves the germination of plants such as Dracocephalum kotschyi Boiss that have a seed dormancy mechanism. However, the interaction effects of germination, temperature, pretreatment with sulfuric acid, treatment with gibberellic acid and mycorrhiza on D. kotschyi germination have not been studied. Therefore, this experiment was performed in vitro to study the effect of seed pretreatment on improvement of germination characteristics of D. kotschyi seed.
Materials and Methods: The treatments studied in this experiment included (1) pretreatment of seed coat with sulfuric acid (97-95 %, for 10 min) and non-pretreatment (distilled water); (2) different treatments including treatments with concentrations of 0, 250, and 500 mg L-1 gibberellic acid (GA) or inoculation with mycorrhiza suspension in two separate experiments; and (3) two temperature treatments; room and refrigerator (about 4 °C) temperatures. The experiment was performed as a factorial based on a completely randomized design with four replications and different germination and initial seedling growth indices were examined.
Results: Gibberellic acid application at room temperature resulted in a significant increase in germination percentage and rate, whereas there was no significant difference between different levels of gibberellic acid and control at 4 °C. Similarly, the application of 250 mg L-1 GA improved seedling length and seedling vigor index at room temperature. While pretreatment with sulfuric acid significantly reduced germination and seedling growth indices compared to non-pretreatment, inoculation with mycorrhiza suspension in both pretreatment conditions compensated the germination reduction caused by sulfuric acid pretreatment by improving germination. Similarly, while the highest seedling length and vigor were obtained from mycorrhizal treatment at room temperature in non-pretreatment with sulfuric acid, at 4 ° C, inoculation with mycorrhiza also significantly reduced the loss in seedling length and seedling vigor index caused by sulfuric acid application.
Conclusion: According to the findings, it seems that the application of 250 mg L-1 GA at room temperature can be considered to improve the germination trend of D. kotschyi. Also, according to the results, treatment with mycorrhiza in sulfuric acid-free treatment at room temperature can be recommended as optimal conditions to improve the germination of D. kotschyi.

1- The interaction effect of chemical pretreatment with biological and hormonal treatments on the germination of Dracocephalum kotschyi was investigated.
2- The application of gibberellic acid at room temperature improved germination compared to the control, whereas it had no effect on germination at 4 °C.
3- Application of mycorrhiza reduced germination loss caused by pretreatment with sulfuric acid and led to maximum germination and seedling growth.
