بخش مهمی از صنعت گلگاری که ارزش زینتی بالایی داشته و به بخشی ضروری از زندگی روزمره مردم تبدیل شده‌اند، گل‌های شاخه‌بریده هستند. هلند، کلمبیا و ایالات متحده آمریکا کشورهای عمده تولیدکننده گل‌های شاخه‌بریده بوده و بیش از 80 درصد تولیـد این گل‌ها در ایران بـه ترتیـب در اسـتان‌های تهـران، فارس، ایلام  و خوزسـتان تمرکـز دارد. آلسترومریا که یک گیاه زینتی مهم است، هم به‌صورت گل شاخه‌بریده و هم برای کشت در گلدان مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. تولید گل آن در اروپا و سایر نقاط جهان به سرعت در حال افزایش بوده و به دلیل داشتن عمر گلجایی طولانی، عملکرد و بهره‎وری بالا و تنوع رنگ زیاد، از نظر تجاری به یکی از موفق‌ترین گل‌های زینتی شاخه‌بریده در ایالات متحده آمریکا، بریتانیا، هلند و ژاپن تبدیل شده است. سطح زیرکشت و میزان تولید آلسترومریا در ایران در سال 1402، به‌ترتیب 42 هکتار و تقریبا 45 میلیون شاخه بوده و استان‌ تهران بیشترین سطح زیرکشت و تولید را داشته است. این گیاه در ایران از طریق ریزوم‌ها و بیشتر در شرایط گلخانه‌ای کشت می‌شود. آلودگی آلسترومریا به بیماری‌هایی مانند پوسیدگی‌های ریشه، پژمردگی و بیماری‌های ویروسی گزارش شده است. آلوده شدن آلسترومریا به ویروس، یک نگرانی جدی است چون این گیاه اساسا به‌صورت رویشی تکثیر می‌شود. در بین بیماری‌های گیاهی، بیماری‌های ویروسی مهمترین مشکل برای آلسترومریا بوده و می‌توانند باعث کاهش قابل‌توجه کیفیت و کمیت گیاه شده و تجارت جهانی را محدود ‌کنند. تاکنون 24 ویروس آلوده‌کننده آلسترومریا در دنیا گزارش شده‌اند.
