این تحقیق به‌منظور بررسی اثر زوال مصنوعی و انبارداری طبیعی بر جوانه‌زنی بذرها و رشد هتروتروفیک گیاهچه نخود زراعی در دانشگاه علوم کشاورزی و منابع طبیعی گرگان در سال 1393 اجرا شد. آزمایش به‌صورت طرح کاملاً تصادفی با چهار تکرار اجرا گردید. تیمارها شامل 8 سطح (انبارداری طبیعی 2 و 4 سال، زوال مصنوعی 1، 2، 3، 4، 5 روز و شاهد) بودند. نتایج نشان داد اثر تیمار زوال بر کل صفات اندازه‌گیری شده معنی‌دار بود. کاهش درصد و سرعت جوانه‌زنی، طول ساقه‌چه و ریشه‌چه، شاخص قدرت بذر و وزن خشک گیاهچه در شدت‌های زوال مصنوعی 4 و 5 روز بیشتر از انبارداری طبیعی 2 و 4 سال بود. هدایت الکتریکی نیز با افزایش شدت زوال مصنوعی تا 4 و 5 روز نسبت به انبارداری طبیعی افزایش بیشتری یافت که به دلیل عدم توانایی غشاها در حفظ انسجام خود بوده و ناشی از حساسیت بیشتر بذرهای به شرایط زوال مصنوعی می‌باشد. کاهش میزان و کارایی استفاده از ذخایر و کسر ذخایر پویا شده در انبارداری طبیعی کمتر از زوال‌های شدید 4 و 5 روز بود ولی بیشترین میزان و کارایی استفاده از ذخایر و کسر ذخایر پویا شده در تیمار 2 روز زوال رخ داد که می‌توان دلیل آن را به افزایش سرعت واکنش‌های ترمیمی بذر طی این شرایط و فعال شدن بیشتر آنزیم‌های هیدرولیتیک نسبت داد. در نهایت نتایج این مطالعه نشان داد زوال مصنوعی در شدت‌های 4 و 5 روز نسبت به انبارداری طبیعی 2 و 4 سال سبب خسارت بیشتری به بذرهای نخود شده که منجر به کاهش بیشتر درصد و سرعت جوانه‌زنی شد.
